Two Movies From Vern

For those seeking a little entertainment, I have a couple quick
movies I wanted to recommend. Whether you like On Demand, Netflix, or
Blockbuster – there is no point wasting your time with a bad movie.
Here are a couple of recommendations for movies to check out on DVD.
The first is “Hot Tub Time Machine.” I know – terrible name. While
it is not as good or crazy as “The Hangover,” it is a very original idea
and incredibly funny. The movie stars John Cusack and “The Daily
Show’s” Rob Corddry and is about exactly what you would think it would
be – through a series of ridiculous mishaps, four friends go back in
time via time machine.
The jokes are outlandish, the material is definitely for adults only,
and if you don’t mind the ridiculous way they go back to the 80′s and
just have fun with it – that is exactly what you will have – fun.
Cusack is very funny and it is wild to see him back in the 80′s – a
generation in which he starred in several great teen movies. Corddry is
outlandish as the wild loser of the bunch and “The Office’s” Craig
Robinson is wonderful in his first real starring vehicle. Movie fans
will also like Chevy Chase, who plays a handy man who pops up throughout
the movie to fix the hot tub. While its no “Fletch” it is nice to see
Chase in something funny for a change.
For those that want “The Hangover” you will be very disappointed –
because this movie is not as good – but if there is a runner up category
“Hot Tub Time Machine” is a good second fiddle.
The second movie to check out is “Taking Chance.” This movie is
the complete opposite of “Hot Tub Time Machine” and one of the most
moving movies I have ever watched. “Taking Chance” was a made for HBO
film that won acclaim at multiple film festivals and won Kevin Bacon a
Golden Globe Award.
The film stars Bacon as a Marine Colonel who feels like he has not
been of value to the country during the conflict in Iraq. After
searching the casualty list, he sees the name of a young private from
his home town who had been killed in action. He volunteers to take the
solider home to his family to be buried.
Based on true events, Bacon is marvelous as Michael Strobel, playing a
decorated solider and family man who travels across the country with
the young fallen Marine. He did not know the solider (Chance) but comes
to know everything that he is about – and what he himself is about.
It does not make political statements. It does not impose opinion on
the war or anything of that nature. It does show that no mater what
your background or political belief – everyone supports the men and
women of the military and the respect we all share for those that have
fallen.
Watch this one with a kleenex, you’ll need it.
